Finding a warm bale in your newly delivered hay is alarming — but not always a crisis. Some heating in freshly baled hay is normal and expected. Severe heating is dangerous, both for quality and for fire risk. This guide helps you tell the difference and act appropriately.
Why Hay Heats Up
Fresh hay contains plant respiration enzymes and microorganisms that continue metabolic activity after baling. This biological activity generates heat — a process called "sweating" in farming parlance. All freshly baled hay above about 12% moisture undergoes some degree of internal heating in the first 2–6 weeks after baling.
This is not automatically a problem. Moderate heating actually helps finalize the curing process and can improve some aspects of palatability. The concern begins when heating becomes excessive — driven by high moisture content that fuels aggressive microbial growth.
Temperature Ranges and What They Mean

How to Check Bale Temperature
Use a long metal rod (at least 30 inches) — a bale probe or a piece of rebar. Insert it into the flat end of a round bale or deep into a square bale stack. Leave it for 10 minutes. Remove and hold the rod immediately — hot to the touch means elevated temperature. A thermometer attached to a long probe gives exact readings. Commercial hay temperature probes are available from farm supply stores.
Hay Fire Risk — Serious and Often Underestimated
Hay barn fires caused by spontaneous combustion from hot hay are not rare. They typically occur 2–6 weeks after baling when internal temperatures peak. Signs that barn-stored hay may be approaching dangerous temperatures: visible steam or smoke rising from the hay, caramel or burning smell, extremely warm outer surfaces on bales stored 3+ weeks. If you observe these signs in stored hay, call your local fire department for guidance before attempting to move the hay — disturbing severely overheated hay can cause it to combust when exposed to air.
What Heating Does to Feed Value
The Maillard reaction — the same chemical process that browns bread — occurs in hay heated above 130°F. It binds amino acids (particularly lysine) to sugars in a form that is completely indigestible. Severely heat-damaged hay loses 30–60% of its available protein. This "heat-damaged protein" appears on forage analysis as ADICP (Acid Detergent Insoluble Crude Protein) — a high ADICP value on a forage test is a direct indicator of heat damage.
