Moldy hay is one of the most common and costly hay problems on small farms — and one of the most preventable. Identifying it correctly matters because the right answer isn't always "throw it out." Some mold situations are manageable for certain animals; others are genuinely dangerous regardless of the animal. This guide gives you the diagnostic framework to make the right call.
The Primary Test: Smell
Smell is the most reliable indicator of hay quality — more reliable than visual inspection for most mold situations, because mold often develops in the interior of a bale before it's visible on the surface.
- Good hay smell: Fresh, slightly sweet, like dried grass or mild dried herbs. Should be pleasant, not offensive.
- Musty smell: The first and most common sign of mold. Even light mustiness indicates fungal activity. Never feed musty hay to horses.
- Ammonia or sour smell: Indicates significant fermentation — hay baled too wet and heated internally. Protein is damaged; feed value is sharply reduced. Dangerous for horses; marginal for cattle.
- Burning or caramel smell: Severe internal heating (above 160°F). Can indicate fire risk in stored bales. Do not store; discard or use immediately for cattle if otherwise acceptable.
- Earthy or soil smell: Often from dirt contamination at baling. Not necessarily mold, but indicates poor-quality baling conditions. Inspect visually.
Visual Signs of Mold
White Powder or Fuzzy Growth
White or gray fuzzy growth on hay is typically field fungi — most commonly Aspergillus or Penicillium species. This is the most common mold you'll encounter. It develops when hay was baled at elevated moisture or when stored hay got wet. The white or gray growth on the surface of flakes or along stems is visually unmistakable. Even small patches indicate conditions suitable for mold throughout the bale.
Black Discoloration
Dark brown to black discoloration in hay usually indicates one of two things: advanced mold (particularly Stachybotrys or black mold species) or severe heat damage from high-moisture baling. Both are serious. Black hay should be discarded for horses and fed to cattle only with veterinary guidance.
Clumping or Matting
Hay that clumps together in masses — where individual stems or flakes stick together when you try to pull them apart — has had enough moisture exposure for fungal mycelia to bind the plant material. This is a reliable sign of significant mold activity even if visual growth isn't immediately obvious.
Dust Clouds
Shaking a handful of hay in sunlight and seeing a cloud of fine particles doesn't always mean mold — older dry hay can be dusty from leaf shattering. But combined with any musty smell, heavy dust indicates mold spore load. Horses with heaves (recurrent airway obstruction) will be affected by heavy dust even without visible mold.

The Outer Layer Rule

Cattle may handle it with minimal issues if it's only surface weathering without heavy mold.
Use a long-handled hay hook or gloved hands to peel back the outer layer. The interior should smell fresh and be visibly green-gold with good structure. If mold extends more than 6–8 inches into the bale, the remainder may still be usable for cattle but should be assessed bale-by-bale.
What to Do With Moldy Hay
- Horses: Do not feed under any circumstances if there is any musty smell or visible mold. The risk of colic, heaves, and mycotoxicosis is not worth the savings.
- Beef cattle: Lightly musty or surface-weathered hay can be fed with monitoring. Have the hay tested for aflatoxin if it's severely degraded and you're in a drought year (drought-stressed crops are higher-risk for aflatoxin-producing molds).
- Composting: Heavily molded hay composts well — the fungal activity that makes it unfit to feed actually accelerates breakdown. Use it as a carbon source in a compost pile or as mulch for garden beds.
- Bedding: Lightly weathered but not heavily molded hay can be used as animal bedding — not feed. Keep bedding hay separate from feed hay to avoid confusion.
