The transition from winter hay feeding to spring pasture is one of the most important management windows of the year — and one where mistakes have real consequences. Moving animals onto lush spring grass too quickly causes digestive upset, laminitis flares in susceptible horses, and bloat in cattle and small ruminants. Moving too slowly wastes pasture. When Is Pasture Ready?
The standard recommendation is to wait until grass reaches 6–8 inches in height before allowing grazing to begin. Height alone isn't the only indicator. Also watch for:

The Critical Rule: Gradual Introduction
Abrupt transitions from dry hay to lush spring pasture are the most common cause of spring digestive emergencies. The rumen microbiome is adapted to the fiber-heavy diet of winter hay — a sudden shift to high-sugar, high-protein spring grass overwhelms the system before the microbial population can adjust.
A safe transition schedule:
- Days 1–3: 15–20 minutes of pasture access per day, immediately after full hay feeding. Animals go out with full stomachs and don't gorge on grass.

Species-Specific Spring Warnings
Horses — Laminitis and EMS Risk
Spring grass is high in nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC) — sugars and fructans that accumulate in rapidly growing grass, particularly during cool nights following warm days. For horses with a history of laminitis, Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS), or Cushing's disease (PPID), spring grass is the highest-risk period of the year.
Management options for at-risk horses: use a grazing muzzle (reduces intake by 70–80% while allowing movement), limit pasture time to early morning when NSC levels are lower (they peak in the afternoon on sunny days), or maintain these horses on a dry lot with tested low-NSC hay through peak spring flush.
Cattle — Grass Tetany
Grass tetany (hypomagnesemia) is a metabolic disorder caused by low magnesium intake relative to potassium. It occurs when cattle graze lush spring grass, which is high in potassium and nitrogen but can be low in magnesium. Affects lactating cows most severely. Prevent with magnesium supplementation — magnesium oxide in loose mineral mix or high-magnesium mineral blocks starting 2–3 weeks before spring turnout and continuing through the early flush period.
